Childbirth Classes and Education

You can approach your child's birth with more confidence when you know just what to expect during your hospital stay and your journey through labor, delivery, and recovery. That’s why The Birthplace developed a two-part childbirth education program, including an online course called "The Gift of Motherhood" and a three-hour on-site class called "Learning at Baptist."

Both classes are free to parents delivering at Baptist.

The Gift of Motherhood Online

The online course, The Gift of Motherhood, covers information you need to know to prepare for your baby's birth. Topics include Choosing Care for Yourself and Your Baby, Childbirth Education and Labor Support, Understanding Labor and Delivery, Caring for Yourself Postpartum, Caring for Your Newborn, and much more. The class also includes informative videos and resources you can download.

The class is available only to those who are delivering at Baptist and have completed the pre-admissions process. Once you have enrolled in the course, you may access it for 90 days. You will receive your login access code when you pre-admit.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

What is The Gift of Motherhood eLearning program?

The Gift of Motherhood eLearning program is a flash-based online book that will allow you to understand all aspects of pregnancy and childbirth.

What do I need to view the book?

You'll need the most recent version of Adobe Flash, a fast internet connection (DSL, cable or other broadband) and Adobe Reader. You'll also need a computer with sound and speakers or headphones to hear the audio.

    How do I use it?

Read the eBook just like you would a traditional book —click on the edge of the book to turn the page. Also, be sure to click on all the icons to learn more. Some icons open a movie or animation, others give you added information. If you see a word in green, you can move your mouse over it to learn the definition.

What if I'm having difficulty with the eBook?

First, make sure your internet connection is working by visiting some other websites. Then, make sure you have the newest version of Adobe Flash. You may need to uninstall the previous version of Flash before you install the new version. For instructions on how to uninstall Flash, visit their support site here.

What if I can't see anything?

It may take a few minutes for the program to load. When internet access is slow, the eBook may load more slowly than normal. If, after several minutes, nothing appears, try restarting your computer.

What if the videos don't work?

Give the videos a moment to load and make sure you have the latest version of Flash. If it still doesn't work, try restarting your computer.

What if my code doesn't work anymore?

Try reentering the code, making sure there are no spaces before or after the code. Note: "0" is a numeral, not the letter “O.”

Siblings: A Kid's View of Babies

A new baby changes everything for a family, and every family member should have a chance to be prepared. For the 3 to 11-year-old in your family, The Birthplace offers a special and fun class on welcoming a new baby to the family. In the class, kids get to watch a short movie on the importance of becoming a big brother or sister; a tour of The Birthplace; a demonstration of diapering, feeding and holding an infant; and a discussion of family adjustments to the new baby. Have your child (or children) bring a teddy bear or a baby doll (one a newborn diaper would fit) with them to class. And don't forget your camera!

Please register everyone in your party, including your children. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Natal Fit Water Aerobics

The physical experience of childbirth has been compared to participating in a world-class athletic competition. Mom and baby both win when Mom is in good physical condition. Through water aerobic classes offered by the Baptist Healthplex, expectant mothers can maintain their fitness level, and new mothers can speed the recovery process--safely. Classes are held Monday through Thursday at Baptist Healthplex in Jackson. Participants should attend three classes a week to benefit from this program. A physician and patient release, found in the Natal Fit brochure, must be signed before participating in Natal Fit.
