At Baptist Memorial Hospital-Tipton, we’re dedicated to providing exceptional maternity care before, during and after delivery. Our experienced labor and delivery team supports families with personalized birthing plans, skin-to-skin bonding, breastfeeding support and newborn care education. Through family-centered services such as rooming-in and family quiet time, we help strengthen the bond between parents and their babies while promoting healthy development and recovery.
We also provide resources on infant safe sleep, baby safety and postpartum care to help you feel confident as you transition into parenthood. Whether you’re welcoming your first baby or expanding your family, Baptist Tipton is committed to delivering compassionate, connected care and creating a positive birth experience for every mother, baby and family.
At Baptist Tipton, we understand that every birth is unique. Our labor and delivery team is committed to providing personalized, family-centered maternity care that reflects your preferences while ensuring the health and safety of both mother and baby. We encourage you to discuss your birthing plan with your doctor or health care provider and share it with your care team upon arrival so we can support your goals whenever possible.
Our comfortable labor and delivery suites are designed with both care and comfort in mind. From comfortable accommodations for support persons to private in-suite amenities, we strive to help mothers and families feel as relaxed and at home as possible throughout the childbirth experience.
Following delivery, our postpartum care team focuses on your recovery, comfort and well-being while providing support, breastfeeding and newborn care education, and encouragement as you begin life with your newborn. From your baby's first moments to your transition home, we're here to help make childbirth as positive, memorable and supportive as possible.
The First Hour: Skin-to-Skin
Holding your baby for the first time is a truly unforgettable moment. One of the most important benefits of labor and delivery is immediate skin-to-skin contact, which places your newborn directly on your bare chest after birth to encourage bonding and support healthy development. This simple practice offers important benefits for both you and your baby, including:
- Helps calm and comfort both mother and baby
- Supports healthy heart rate, temperature and breathing regulation
- Encourages early feeding cues and promotes digestion
- Stimulates release of hormones that support breastfeeding, bonding and maternal well-being
Family Quiet Time
Following delivery, we encourage new parents to take time to rest, recover and bond with their newborn during family quiet time. Each day, our postpartum care unit provides dedicated, uninterrupted time for families to connect with their baby or enjoy some well-deserved rest. This quiet period is ideal for breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact, or simply getting to know your newborn. Your maternity care team remains available at all times with the touch of a call button, while visitors are encouraged to respect this important bonding and recovery time by planning their visits before or after the designated quiet period.
Rooming-in
We encourage rooming-in, a family-centered maternity care practice that allows your newborn to stay in your hospital room day and night rather than in a separate nursery. Your baby will remain by your side during baths, weighings and other routine newborn care procedures. This approach offers many benefits, including:
- Promotes bonding between parent and baby
- Supports breastfeeding success and healthy milk production
- Helps you recognize and respond to your baby's hunger cues
- Encourages healthy newborn growth and weight gain
- Builds confidence and comfort in your new parenting role
Benefits of Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding provides important health benefits for both mother and baby, strengthens your bond and helps you better recognize your baby’s feeding patterns and hunger cues. As part of comprehensive postpartum and newborn care, breastfeeding supports healthy growth and development while promoting maternal wellness.
For your baby, breast milk:
- Provides ideal nutrition, antibodies and immune system support
- Helps reduce the risk of ear, respiratory and digestive infections
- Lowers the risk of sudden infant death syndrome
For you, breastfeeding:
- May lower the risk of breast and ovarian cancer
- Helps reduce postpartum bleeding and supports recovery after delivery
- Can support postpartum weight loss and a healthy return to pre-pregnancy weight
Baptist Tipton is committed to promoting infant safe sleep and providing families with the education and resources needed to keep their babies safe. As part of this commitment, Baptist Tipton is pursuing certification through the Cribs for Kids® National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program. This nationally recognized program honors hospitals that model and teach safe sleep practices based on the latest American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines. Through staff education, parent instruction and evidence-based newborn care, Baptist Tipton is helping reduce the risk of sudden unexpected infant death, including sudden infant death syndrome, accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed and other sleep-related infant injuries.
After your baby arrives, our nurses will provide guidance and support as you learn to care for your newborn. As part of our family-centered maternity care program, your care team will answer questions about infant feeding, newborn care and baby safety while helping you build confidence in your parenting skills. Before you leave the hospital, you'll also receive education on postpartum recovery and caring for your own health and well-being. Our experienced nursing staff is committed to ensuring you feel informed, supported and prepared for a successful transition home with your baby.
