Rated by HealthGrades as Tennessee's top-rated heart surgery program,* the Baptist Heart Institute is designed to deliver comprehensive services to its patients in the most convenient way possible. It combines all heart services in one facility to support high-quality care, research, education and data management.

A surgery addition, cardiac catheterization labs, a pre and postcardiac patient staging area, cardiopulmonary transplant unit, cardiovascular recovery/cardiovascular intensive care unit,
two cardiac medicine units and a cardiac intervention unit make up the Baptist Heart Institute. The facility also includes a waiting area for patients’ families.

Related Services and Information

Baptist is the only health care system in the Mid-South that offers the full spectrum of heart care, from noninvasive cardiology to adult heart transplantation. The Baptist Heart Institute also houses the Ford-Goltman Clinical Research Center, an inpatient facility that allows researchers to conduct several types of clinical research trials. For more information, call 901-226-5000.

The surgery addition has open-heart surgery rooms equipped with innovative technology available. The rooms are sized to accommodate the equipment and increase efficiency of care. The inpatient catheterization labs are next to the surgery suite, making it more convenient for patients, physicians and staff. Physicians and staff can care for cardiac catheterization patients and transport them to and from procedures more efficiently in the cardiac patient pre and post staging area.

The cardiopulmonary transplant unit/coronary care unit and cardiovascular recovery/cardiovascular intensive care unit are located on the second floor of the Heart Institute. Here, care is provided for patients immediately following heart and lung transplants and open-heart surgery procedures. A bridge connects the cardiovascular intensive care unit to the cardiac step-down unit, which is in the west wing of Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis, to make it more convenient to move patients as their conditions improve.

The family waiting room offers many of the necessities for long and short stays, including a nourishment and vending area, shower facilities and a locker room. Staff keep waiting room guests updated on patients' conditions.

Through the Heart Institute, doctors, staff and patients have an increased awareness of and access to new treatments. In addition, doctors focus on research and new treatment options, which affect both the quality and length of life.

New cure for a silent killer
Baptist now offers a breakthrough procedure for patients with chronic atrial fibrillation — known as the “silent killer” because there was no reliable way to anticipate heart failure.

Atrial fibrillation occurs when the heart’s valves quiver instead of pumping effectively, causing blood to pool and increasing the risk of stroke.

More than 20 percent of strokes are caused by this disease, according to the American Heart Association. And the strokes are usually more debilitating due to the larger size of the clots. The new procedure, called “convergence,” is minimally invasive and eliminates the need for open-heart surgery.

For more information about this groundbreaking procedure, please call Dr. Ed Garrett at 901-747-1262.
