Employee Profile: Becca Rector
Nursing is a career built on calling, compassion and challenge. For medical-surgical nurses, it is a job that extends beyond purpose and passion. Med-surg nurses are at the core of all bedside care, overseeing the health of patients with a wide range of needs and conditions.
At Baptist Memorial Hospital-Collierville, Rebecca “Becca” Rector, head nurse on the medical-surgical unit, has answered the calling for nursing and discovered her community along the way.
After three years with Baptist, Rector shares what drives her to show up day after day.
"I enjoy the variety," said Rector. "It's not just one specialty or area of nursing. We take care of patients who have different medical or surgical conditions in one area. I appreciate the different opportunities to provide care."
Med-surg nurses care for a wide variety of patients, from those recovering after surgery or managing chronic conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, to orthopedic conditions or falls. No two days look the same for nurses in this role.
That's what fuels Rector's passion for the work.
“A good team and environment make for a good shift, no matter how the day looks,” said Rector.
Nursing isn’t easy, but Rector speaks of her team with pride. She describes a culture of care, connection and unwavering support. Every nurse is seen and heard throughout his or her shift.
“We have “hall buddies” who are always there to help out during a shift. If you call for help, it's not a problem to get it.”
