Baptist Leake earns five-star rating from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for second consecutive year

CARTHAGE, Miss., Aug. 16, 2024 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has awarded Baptist Memorial Hospital-Leake a five-star rating for quality, the federal agency’s highest distinction for care.

Only 8.2% of hospitals received five stars in the July 2024 results, and this is the second year in a row Baptist Leake has received this distinction. The overall rating, between one and five stars, shows how well each hospital performed on a set of quality measures compared to other hospitals in the United States. The more stars a hospital received, the better the hospital performed on available quality measures.

“We are excited to receive a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services,” said Daryl Weaver, CEO and administrator of Baptist Leake. “This recognition highlights the excellence and dedication of our team and their commitment to providing high-quality health care for our patients every day.”

Baptist Leake is one of only two hospitals in Mississippi to receive five stars. The ratings are based on 46 hospital quality measures, which are divided into five quality categories — mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience and timely and effective care. CMS created the Five-Star Quality Rating System to help consumers, their families and caregivers compare nursing homes more easily.

CMS rated more than 3,000 hospitals across the country on a scale of one to five stars. Of these hospitals, 381 hospitals received five stars. Medicare based the star rating on measures that include patient reviews, outcomes and infection rates. To learn more about star ratings and Hospital Compare, visit medicare.gov/care-compare/.
