What began with compassionate care for her family turned into a 25-year career for Registered Nurse Gretta Carter.
Gretta Carter is a dedicated registered nurse with Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County. Her career spans 25-plus years, and her passion for nursing and her commitment to patients are the reasons she returns each day.
I believe I am here on purpose, and it is all by divine assignment.
Carter's experience with Baptist Union County goes beyond employment. Her journey is a personal calling shaped by an experience she had nearly 20 years ago when her father was a patient at Baptist Memorial Hospital. He and Carter received exceptional care during the last days of his life in the hospital. That's when Carter realized Baptist Memorial Health Care was more than just a workplace.
It's the moment I realized Baptist was home and the place where I can finish my nursing career.
Working on the medical-surgical unit at Baptist Union County, Carter has witnessed countless moments that remind her of her purpose and dedication. Speaking of the moment that makes her most proud, she shares the story of a patient visiting with a pastor. The patient spoke of how one nurse's encouragement made a difference in his recovery. That nurse was Carter, a member of the same church.
Carter appreciates Baptist Memorial's commitment to integrating faith with its mission, allowing her to provide care to patients physically and spiritually.
One of the things I love about Baptist is the fact that we get the opportunity to take care of our patients based on the three-fold ministry of Christ, which is teaching, preaching and healing.
She attributes her longevity at Baptist Memorial to the friendly, supportive and collaborative environment she experiences daily, making it a place she proudly calls home.
The med-surg unit that I work on — we definitely have teamwork — and that's one of the things that keeps me coming back every day with a positive attitude.
She loves that nurses at Baptist Memorial practice evidence-based care. “We have excellent doctors, and everyone's involved in giving quality care.”
“The word that sums up my experience at Baptist would definitely be ‘purpose,’” Carter said. "My passion for nursing keeps me coming back each day.”
