Baptist Gynecologic Oncologist Discusses Fibroids Ahead of Live Seminar

Fibroids are a common issue for many women – in fact, studies have found that by age 50, 70-80 percent of women have fibroids. On Sept. 20, Baptist Gynecologic Oncologist Dr. Sanjeev Kumar will discuss fibroids in a seminar we’ll broadcast via Facebook Live, but he also outlined some of the most important facts below. Can you provide a general overview of what a fibroid is and who is at the highest risk? A fibroid is a smooth muscle tumor that originates in the uterus. African-American women, and women who are under the age of 50 have the highest risk for developing fibroids. What causes fibroids? Fibroids are caused by genetics, family history and hormonal influences. What symptoms should women look for? While many women don’t experience any symptoms and are unaware that they have fibroids, the most common symptoms include the following:

Heavy bleeding
Pelvic pain
Pelvic pressure
Abdominal bloating

What are some of the most common myths about fibroids? Three of the biggest myths are

Fibroids shrink on their own.
It’s OK to leave fibroids alone.
Fibroids are not cancerous.

What are the next steps following a diagnosis? How are fibroids treated? Fibroids can be treated medically or surgically. If they are treated medically, this includes hormonal treatments. Surgical treatments include robotic removal of fibroids and robotic hysterectomy.
