COLUMBUS, Miss. – Dr. Velmalia Matthews-Smith recently began practicing medicine at Baptist Medical Group-Golden Triangle Oncology.

Matthews-Smith joined the group in January and will be practicing with Dr. Wail Alnas. She most recently practiced oncology and hematology at the Jackson Clinic in Jackson, Tenn.

The office is located at 345 Baptist Blvd., on the campus of Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. Matthews-Smith sees patients Monday through Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Her office is closed for lunch from noon until 1 p.m.

She earned her medical degree from the University of South Alabama in 2004 and completed fellowship training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., where she was awarded the Most Outstanding Clinician Award and the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award.
She is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association.
“We are honored Dr. Matthews-Smith has chosen to join our practice,” said Jim Boswell, vice president of physician operations and chief executive officer for BMG. “She is a very talented physician who is well-rounded in all aspects of oncology care.”

BMG is a multispecialty group practice with 31 different specialties in three states—Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. In 2011, Baptist announced plans to build the area’s first integrated cancer center, which will be located in Germantown, Tenn., and will serve as a regional resource. BMG formed partnerships with three major cancer clinics in the metro-Memphis area: The Family Cancer Center Foundation, Boston Baskin Cancer Foundation and Integrity Oncology Foundation with the goal of having the three groups work together in the center.

In the Columbus area, BMG has recently opened several practices, including BMG-Columbus Cardiology Care and BMG-Golden Triangle Family Medicine.
