COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shots

COVID-19 vaccines are working well to prevent severe illness, hospitalizations and death, but the duration of protection against COVID-19 is uncertain. Some studies report that immunity begins to wane after two to six months. Therefore, we encourage fully vaccinated individuals to get the COVID-19 vaccine booster shot as soon as they are eligible to receive it.

Maximize your protection for yourself and others

Booster shots for the three FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines are now available for all adults age 18 years old or older. Adults age 50 or older, or 18 or older and living in a long-term care facility, are highly encouraged to get a booster, especially as we enter the holiday season.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have determined that you do NOT need to get the booster from the same manufacturer of your previous shots.

The only other requirement is that you must have received your second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines at least six months ago, or the one-dose Johnson & Johnson/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine at least two months ago.

While the vaccine is available to children age 5-17, booster shots are currently not available for children younger than 18 years old.

COVID-19 vaccination booster shots are available by appointment for eligible individuals at many of Baptist’s locations throughout West Tennessee, Eastern Arkansas, and North and Central Mississippi.

The COVID-19 Vaccines are Safe, Effective, and Vital to Ending the Pandemic

The FDA, on the basis of the most extensive data ever produced for a medicine or drug, gave its full approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, also now called Comirnaty (koe-mir’-na-tee), for the prevention of COVID-19 disease in individuals 16 years of age and older. And all three vaccines – Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson – are all still available to anyone over the age of 12 under the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from earlier this year. Full FDA approval of the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are anticipated for later this year.

With the widespread emergence of the delta variant, which has led to a surge in COVID cases and deaths, getting the vaccine is as important as ever. Tens of millions of Americans, and millions more worldwide, have received the vaccine, suffering little to no side effects. Here are the facts:

The vaccines are safe. There have been no reported serious medical events directly attributed to the vaccines, , and the FDA’s full approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine underscores its safety.

The vaccines are effective. Ongoing studies have shown the vaccines to be exceptionally effective in reducing infections, transmissions, and severity of illness brought on by COVID-19, including the delta variant.

The vaccine are important to returning to normalcy. Vaccines are the most effective and accessible tools to slowing the transmission of disease and eradicating it.
