Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Team

Meet our pediatric specialists

The pediatric specialists dedicated to caring for our youngest patients bring a wealth of training and experience to the Spence and Becky Wilson Baptist Children's Hospital. Our team includes specialists in surgery, gastroenterology, and pediatric intensivists. Likewise, our support specialists include critical care nurses and respiratory therapists who work closely with all physicians.

Leading our critical care unit are our pediatric intensivists. Working as a team to provide the highest levels of care, they also collaborate with pediatric sub-specialists such as cardiologists, neurologists, orthopedists, ophthalmologists, ENTs, plastic surgeons, endocrinologists, general pediatric surgeons, neurosurgeons and gastroenterologists. Respiratory therapists are also available to provide pulmonary care or life support.

Critical care nurses typically spend the most time with patients, as they are responsible for the day-to-day care and ongoing monitoring of children. PICU nurses also facilitate communication among physicians, families and other team members to collaboratively determine the best path to a child's recovery. To help fulfill this important role, each one of our nurses is board certified in their respective pediatric specialty and has received training in:

  • STABLE, Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Lab Work, and Emotional Support
  • CPI, Crisis Prevention
  • BLS, Basic Life Support
  • PEARS, Pediatric Emergency Response Support
  • PALS, Pediatric Advanced Life Support
  • ACLS, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support
  • NRP, Neonatal Resuscitation Program
  • ENPC, Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course
  • TETC, Trauma Emergency Transport Course
  • TNCC, Trauma Nurse Certification Course
  • EKG Certification Pediatric Electrocardiogram Course from the American Heart Association

Clinical Professionals

In addition to the intensivists, sub-specialists, respiratory therapists and critical care nurses, you may have one or more of these clinical professionals on your child's care team:

Our PICU teams work together to provide compassionate quality care, stability and a nurturing atmosphere. While the role each member plays may differ, we are united by a passion for family-centered care. Parents and visitors in the PICU will notice a close relationship among patients, family, staff members and hospital leaders–a relationship that allows for an exceptional level of teamwork and the best possible outcomes.
