Transplant Program
About Our Transplant Program
Baptist Memorial Hospital has long been a transplant pioneer in the Mid-South area.
Baptist physicians completed the area's first open heart surgery in 1960 and the first heart transplant in 1985. Dr. H. Edward Garrett, Jr., the transplant program's director, performed the area's first heart-lung and double lung transplant in 1991. As of Dec. 2010, Baptist physicians have performed more than 280 heart transplants and 85 lung transplants.
Our team of transplant specialists uses a multidisciplinary support system to integrate every aspect of a patient's care before, during and following the transplant procedure.
All the needs of the patient and their families are met through the close collaboration of our physicians, nurses and transplant coordinators. At Baptist a strong emphasis is placed on family involvement, quality-of-life issues, and the cost-effective delivery of care throughout the transplant process
The Lung Transplant Program at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis is currently inactive. For more information, contact Jane Thayer at 901-226-2199. The Lung Transplant Program has been performing successful lung transplants since 1991, and we continue to be committed to changing the number of lives lung diseases claim so early.
