The Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) is a research study to determine if selenium and vitamin E can help prevent prostate cancer. SELECT is funded by the National Cancer Institute and coordinated by the Southwest Oncology Group.

The Baptist Clinical Research Center is among the more than 400 Study Sites in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico enrolling men in SELECT. Approximately 32,000 men from the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada will participate in the study.

SELECT Q & A

Men in the study will visit their research site once every six months. Upon enrollment, they will be assigned by chance to one of four groups. One group will take 200 micrograms of selenium daily plus an inactive capsule, or placebo, that looks like vitamin E. Another group will take 400 milligrams of vitamin E daily along with a placebo that looks like selenium. A third group will take both selenium and vitamin E. And a final group will be given two placebos. All health care services and supplements associated with SELECT will be provided free of charge to all participants.

Men may be able to participate in SELECT if they:
  • are age 55 or older; age 50 or older for African-American men
  • have never had prostate cancer and have not had any other cancer, except nonmelanoma skin cancer, in the last five years
  • are generally in good health
