When every second counts, Baptist’s emergency departments stand ready 24 hours a day to provide immediate, expert care by certified emergency care physicians, nurses, technicians and radiologists.

If you or a loved one is experiencing a life-threatening injury or illness, such as

  • Chest pain and difficulty breathing
  • Stroke symptoms, including face drooping, arm weakness and slurred speech
  • Significant physical trauma, such as a broken bones, lacerations and concussions

In an emergency, please call 911 immediately or go to the nearest Baptist Memorial Hospital emergency department.

Many of our hospitals offer specialized emergency care through trauma centers, telemedicine and pediatric emergency rooms with specialized pediatric equipment and 24/7 coverage by pediatric nurses, physicians and hospitalists.

Serious Conditions Treated First

When you visit a Baptist emergency department, your wait time may depend on the severity of your condition-because the ER staff uses the triage process to classify patients into four levels of urgency:

Level 1: Patients have life-threatening injuries or illnesses that require immediate attention.
Examples: Cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, baby that is limp or unresponsive

Level 2: Patients require very urgent treatment. The condition of patients with these types of serious illnesses or injuries may deteriorate, or the patient may suffer long-term problems if not treated as quickly as possible.
Examples: Active chest pain, signs of stroke, suicidal tendencies

Level 3: Patients have conditions that are not immediately life threatening and likely will not deteriorate during a wait, but will require two or more resources from hospital departments other than the ER.
Examples: Abdominal pain, lower leg pain, severe headache, irregular heart rate, shortness of breath

Level 4: Patients usually can reasonably wait for treatment at the ER, but will require one resource from another hospital department, such as X-rays.
Examples: Bone fractures, sore throat and flu symptoms

Level 5: Patients can reasonably wait for treatment at the ER or receive treatment at a Baptist Minor Medical Center or a physician's office and will require no additional resources outside of an exam and prescription in the ER.
Examples: Allergic reactions with no signs of shock and small cuts that require stitches

What to Know Before Your ER Visit

What should I bring with me to the ER? If you are escorting a loved one to the emergency room or if you are in a medical emergency, do not forget to bring insurance documentation and a photo ID. It is also helpful to carry a list of all medications that you or your loved one is currently taking.

What insurance do you accept? Most Baptist hospitals accept all major insurance companies in our region, including Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, Coventry and United. Check with your particular hospital for more information.

Will I have to wait? You may have to wait. Patients are treated according to the urgency of their condition, not their time of arrival. We try to ensure that wait times are as short as possible. There are waiting rooms in which you may be required to stay while waiting for an available physician.

Who will be treating me? Emergency medicine professionals may include an attending physician, resident physician, physician assistant, intern, primary nurse, emergency room technicians, X-ray technicians and respiratory therapists.

Can I have visitors? Baptist allows two visitors to accompany you while you are being treated. However, during severe trauma cases, family and friends may be asked to remain in the waiting room so doctors can devote their full attention to you.
