              Baptist Habitat Housewarming

From left to right, Key Onna, Tasha, Roderick and Khanya Allen enjoy their new kitchen, stocked with gifts from Baptist colleagues.

Baptist colleagues completed 2nd Habitat Home
For the second consecutive year, Baptist contributed the entire $60,000 sponsorship for a local Habitat for Humanity home. Baptist volunteers worked all 480 shifts to complete the five-bedroom, two-bathroom house over a two-month period, and on June 23, the Allen family received the keys to their new home.

“I had the opportunity to meet Roderick and Tasha Allen before we started the build, and they are a sweet, loving and gracious family,” said Carolyn Hicks Fry, Baptist’s volunteer coordinator for the build. “They are very thankful for all the work that has been put into this house to make it a home.”

The Allens have six children and attend El-Shaddai Christian Church, where Roderick is a youth pastor, Tasha is training to be a minister, and the children sing in the choir.

In addition to all the volunteer hours, Baptist colleagues contributed housewarming gifts to make the Allen family feel right at home — towels and linens, rugs, cleaning supplies, toiletries, a vacuum, and a kitchen equipped with coffee pot, microwave, and a fully stocked pantry. Baptist’s Information Systems department also completely restored the family’s computer, which had been broken.

One of Baptist’s most important missions is to strengthen our community through initiatives that support the underserved. Our partnership with Habitat for Humanity has been so successful, we built a third project in DeSoto County.

Habitat still needs donations to help the Allens fully furnish their house. If you would like to help, please contact the Baptist Community Relations department at 901-227-3531.

Baptist Memorial Health Care is committed to serving the Mid-South community. Baptist employees and physicians, through their donations of time, money, and resources, help to make the Mid-South a better community for everyone.

In fiscal year 2010, Baptist provided $204 million in community benefit, which includes charity care, patient accounts that weren’t paid, free community health fairs and educational events, community contributions and other activities.

All of the hospitals in the Baptist Memorial Health Care system offer health education and screening programs in their respective communities. These screenings include free blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol checks.

The hospitals also work with local chambers of commerce and support charitable organizations such as United Way, March of Dimes, adopt-a-school programs and many other worthwhile organizations.

Here are recent examples of community care throughout the Baptist system:
  • The Operation Outreach mobile health care clinic began a partnership with Davis Vision to provide free eyeglasses for its homeless patients. At the event to announce the partnership, Baptist offered free health care screenings, including blood pressure, body mass index, glucose, cholesterol and breast cancer screenings, to more than 280 patients. Davis Vision also provided free vision screenings, and the Bellevue Baptist Christian Mobile Dental Clinic provided dental check-ups.
