Dear Friends:

This year has brought many wonderful successes for us at Baptist Memorial hospitals in the metro-Memphis area - successes we consider gifts. And we have been faithful to our not-for-profit mission by working hard to return those gifts to you, the members of the communities we serve.

It is only through the dedication of the more than 7,000 colleagues and 1,500 physicians affiliated with Baptist's metro-area entities that Baptist continues to enhance the health of the Mid-South community. These metro-area facilities include Baptist Memorial Hospital-Collierville, Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto, Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis, Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women, Baptist Memorial Restorative Care Hospital, Baptist Rehabilitation-Germantown, Baptist College of Health Sciences, Baptist Trinity Home Care & Hospice and Baptist Minor Medical Centers.

One of the greatest gifts we received at Baptist in 2004 occurred when The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center - named by U.S. News & World Report as the nation's No. 1 cancer hospital - selected Baptist as its partner to bring the latest advancements in adult cancer treatment to the Mid-South through the M. D. Anderson Physicians Network. This means we can offer you a level of cancer care never before available here, all while you're at home with the people you love.

Also in 2004, Baptist began constructing a new patient bed tower at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto, marking the largest health care certificate of need ever approved by the state of Mississippi. The new building represents a substantial expansion of the Baptist DeSoto campus, and that, in turn, means we can bring even more services and new technology to care for the people of DeSoto County.

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis purchased several new technologies this year, bringing some of the latest advancements in care to our patients. These included the SimMan® patient simulator and a pharmacy robot, allowing us to offer you more accurate, safe care. And physicians at the hospital continued to operate using the da Vinci® surgical robot, providing patients with faster, easier surgeries. In addition, we were one of the first in the country to acquire Stereotaxis' magnetic technology for catheter-based heart procedures. You, our community, gave us a gift when you named us your most preferred hospital for the ninth year in a row in the National Research Corp.'s consumer choice poll.

We're grateful for the advances we've made and successes we've had this year - and we consider them all gifts that allow us, in turn, to offer you even higher quality care. But we're proud to say that Baptist is committed to giving our community many other gifts, as well. In 2004, we contributed to our communities' well-being in many ways - including providing millions of dollars in charity care and offering free health screenings to thousands. This report highlights just a few of our contributions to the community through such activities as charitable contributions, educational events and volunteer work. It's very gratifying to see the thousands of lives God has enabled us to touch in 2004.

We also want to extend the sincerest of thanks to the devoted leadership team of Baptist's metro-Memphis entities, pictured in this report, as well as to the thousands of dedicated colleagues and hard-working physicians who enact Baptist's mission every single day. They give more from their hearts than you can imagine, and they are our heroes. Thank you for allowing us to serve you; we humbly submit this report of our community contributions in 2004.
