Qualifying women can get a free mammogram at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Booneville

BOONEVILLE, Miss., May 2, 2014 – The Susan G. Komen Foundation recently awarded a $32,000 grant to Baptist Memorial Health Care's Mississippi regional hospitals: Baptist Memorial Hospital-Booneville, Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi and Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County. The grant will allow medically underserved women in the area to get a mammogram and other diagnostic services for free.

"We can save lives if women get take advantage of this program to receive mammograms, since one out of eight women will have breast cancer in her lifetime," Benjie Lane, director of radiology at Baptist Booneville, said. "To be considered medically underserved, you must be uninsured or be on Medicaid or Medicare."

In 2013, the American Cancer Society estimated that there would be 4,700 new cases of female breast cancer in Mississippi and 890 deaths. Studies have indicated uninsured women are usually diagnosed with larger tumors and at later stages than otherwise similar, insured women. More than 30 percent of the deaths from breast cancer in women older than 50 years of age are preventable through mammography screening. When caught early, nine out of 10 women will survive breast cancer.

"We are committed to raising the collective health of women in our community," said James Grantham, CEO and administrator of Baptist Booneville. "The funds provided by the Susan G. Komen Foundation help us provide access to underserved women, many of whom have never had a mammogram."

Baptist Booneville is a 114-bed hospital that offers diagnostic services, critical care and other acute care services. It operates one of the few geriatric psychiatric units in the area, and it also offers a Sleep Disorder Lab and a specialty clinic that includes cardiology, otolaryngology, neurology, ophthalmology and orthopedic services. It was recently named Hospital of the Year (100 beds or less) by the Mississippi Nurses Association.
