Baptist Memphis Ranks Among Top 5 Percent in Nation for Fourth Consecutive Year

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis announced today that a new study ranks its clinical quality among the top 5 percent in the nation for the fourth year in a row.

The study by HealthGrades, an independent health care ratings organization, analyzed patient outcomes at each of the nation's 5,000 nonfederal hospitals from 2007 until 2009 and named hospitals in the top 5 percent HealthGrades Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical ExcellenceTM.

"Our entire Baptist Memphis team is the reason we won this award for fourth year in a row," said Derick Ziegler administrator and CEO of Baptist Memphis. "Their dedication and commitment to providing high-quality care to all patients and families we serve is evident in receiving this prestigious award."

According to the HealthGrades Hospital Quality and Clinical Excellence study, Baptist Memphis demonstrated patient outcomes that far exceeded those of other hospitals. Risk-adjusted mortality rates at Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence were 29 percent lower. In-hospital complication rates were 9 percent lower.

Baptist Memphis is the only West Tennessee hospital and one of only 268 hospitals that received this distinction from HealthGrades. Baptist Memphis achieved other notable HealthGrades recognitions and awards, including being ranked no. 1 in Tennessee for overall cardiac services, cardiac surgery and and GI medical treatment. The hospital also received HealthGrades Specialty Excellence Awards for cardiac care, cardiac surgery, stroke care, pulmonary care, prostatectomy, critical care and emergency medicine.

"Baptist Memphis can be proud of the contributions of its physicians, nurses and staff in achieving outstanding patient care," said Dr. Rick May, HealthGrades, vice president of clinical quality services and co-author of the study. "The Memphis community is fortunate to have access to some of the highest quality hospital care in the nation."

This is the ninth year HealthGrades has independently analyzed the clinical quality performance of all nonfederal hospitals across the country in 26 procedures and diagnoses. In the study, the company reviewed approximately 40 million hospitalization records from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, from 2007, 2008 and 2009. All hospitals that participate in the Medicare program were part of the independent study. Hospitals that receive the HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence rank in the top 5percent when all 26 individual scores are aggregated into an overall score.

The Baptist Memphis campus includes the 706-bed hospital that is the flagship of the Baptist Memorial Health Care system. It serves as a major referral center for patients from across the Mid-South and offers many diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitation services. The hospital has added hundreds of beds in the past few years, with the opening of a new patient tower and the Baptist Heart Institute. Consumers have rated Baptist Memphis their most preferred hospital for overall health care services in an independent National Research Corp. poll for the past 15 years in a row, and according to HealthGrades®, Baptist Memphis ranks in the top 5 percent nationally for emergency medicine and cardiac surgery and in the top 10 percent in the nation for overall cardiac services, stroke treatment, pulmonary services, prostatectomy, GI medical treatment and critical care.
