Baptist Memphis Ranks Among Top 5 Percent in Nation for Emergency Medicine

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis announced today that a study ranks its emergency medicine among the top 5 percent in the nation.

The study by HealthGrades, an independent health care ratings organization, is based on an analysis of more than seven million Medicare patient records from 2007 to 2009. The study focused on 12 of the most common and life-threatening medical emergencies among that patient population, including heart attack, stroke, pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

"Our entire Baptist Memphis emergency medicine team is the reason we won this award," said Derick Ziegler, administrator and CEO of Baptist Memphis. "Their commitment to providing consistent, high-quality care to patients is evident in receiving this prestigious award."

According to HealthGrades, a large number of Americans visit an emergency department each year with many of those visits resulting in hospitalization. A 2006 study found that 44 percent of hospitalizations began in the emergency department.

HealthGrades identified 268 hospitals with the lowest risk-adjusted mortality and designated these hospitals as recipients of the Emergency Medicine Excellence AwardTM. According to HealthGrades, the Emergency Medicine Excellence Award is intended as a proxy for the effectiveness of a hospital's multi-disciplinary teamwork and its ability to diagnose, triage and provide timely care to their patients admitted through the emergency department.

"In the case of a medical emergency, patients need to get to the closest emergency room as fast as possible. No exceptions," said Dr. Rick May, study co-author and HealthGrades Vice President of clinical quality services. "That said, we encourage patients to prepare in advance by identifying top-performing hospitals close to home. Our research shows that it's not just the care you receive the moment you arrive that makes the difference between life and death, but the hospital's ability to continue to provide you with the right care at the right time if you need to be admitted."

HealthGrades is an independent source of physician information and hospital quality outcomes.

The Baptist Memphis campus includes the 706-bed hospital that is the flagship of the Baptist Memorial Health Care system. It serves as a major referral center for patients from across the Mid-South and offers many diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitation services. The hospital has added hundreds of beds in the past few years, with the opening of a new patient tower and the Baptist Heart Institute. Consumers have rated Baptist Memphis their most preferred hospital for overall health care services in an independent National Research Corp. poll for the past 15 years in a row, and according to HealthGrades®, Baptist Memphis ranks in the top 5 percent nationally for cardiac surgery and in the top 10 percent in the nation for overall cardiac services, stroke treatment, pulmonary services, prostatectomy, GI medical treatment and critical care.
