Baptist Memphis Physician Performs New Cardiac Procedure

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis and Stern Cardiovascular Foundation cardiologist Dr. Eric Johnson performed the city's first cryoballoon procedure with a new technology called ArticFront Cardiac CryoAblation.

The new procedure, developed by Medtronic, is used to treat patients with atrial fibrillation, one of the most common heart disorders in the country. More than three million Americans suffer from the disease, which causes irregular heartbeats and, if left untreated, can increase the risk of stroke and heart failure.

The new, minimally invasive procedure blocks the conduction of atrial fibrillation in cardiac tissue using a coolant delivered through a catheter. The cooling makes the catheter more stable, providing more efficient therapy for the patient.

"The atrial fibrillation surgical procedure takes less time and yields better clinical results for patients than other procedures," said Johnson, who has more than a dozen procedures scheduled in Memphis in the coming weeks.

The Baptist Memphis campus includes the 706-bed hospital that is the flagship of the Baptist Memorial Health Care system. It serves as a major referral center for patients from across the Mid-South and offers many diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitation services. The hospital has added hundreds of beds in the past few years, with the opening of a new patient tower and the Baptist Heart Institute. Consumers have rated Baptist Memphis their most preferred hospital for overall health care services in an independent National Research Corp. poll for the past 15 years in a row, and according to HealthGrades® in 2011, Baptist Memphis ranks in the top 5 percent nationally for emergency medicine and cardiac surgery and in the top 10 percent in the nation for overall cardiac services, cardiac surgery, stroke treatment, pulmonary services, prostatectomy, GI medical treatment and critical care.
