Baptist Memphis Lung Transplant Program Receives Medicare Certification

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis' lung transplant program recently received Medicare Transplant Center certification.

To receive the Medicare Conditions of Participation for Lung Transplant approval, Baptist Memphis had to perform10 lung transplants in a rolling 12-month period and participate in an on-site survey conducted by the Tennessee State Survey Agency, which is a part of the State of Tennessee Department of Health.

The certification means that more private insurance companies will cover the procedure for patients needing a lung transplant.

"The Medicare certification further demonstrates Baptist Memphis' long-standing commitment to providing high quality care to patients requiring lung transplants in the Mid-South area," said Derick Ziegler, administrator and CEO of Baptist Memphis. "The certification means that Medicare recipients needing a lung transplant can continue to stay close to home where family and friends can provide critical support during and after the transplant."

Baptist Memphis' heart and lung transplant program celebrated its 25th year in 2010. Baptist Memphis has transplanted almost 300 hearts and almost 100 lungs. The program is the only adult heart and lung transplant program in the city and the only lung program in West Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi.

The Baptist Memphis campus includes the 706-bed hospital that is the flagship of the Baptist Memorial Health Care system. It serves as a major referral center for patients from across the Mid-South and offers many diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitation services. The hospital has added hundreds of beds in the past few years, with the opening of a new patient tower and the Baptist Heart Institute. Consumers have rated Baptist Memphis their most preferred hospital for overall health care services in an independent National Research Corp. poll for the past 15 years in a row, and according to HealthGrades® in 2011, Baptist Memphis ranks in the top 5 percent nationally for emergency medicine and cardiac surgery and in the top 10 percent in the nation for overall cardiac services, stroke treatment, pulmonary services, prostatectomy, GI medical treatment and critical care.
