Baptist College of Health Sciences instructors to participate in simulation fellowship

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Libby Archer, professor of nursing at Baptist College of Health Sciences, and Nan Riedé, assistant professor of nursing, were recently selected to serve as 2011-2012 Simulation Fellows by the Tennessee Simulation Alliance.
Their responsibilities include serving as resource faculty to the annual meeting of the TNSA, developing collaborative simulation scripts, providing mentor experiences for faculty needing assistance in simulation management, and supporting other simulation fellows in scholarly activities related to simulation.

“Simulation is an alternative clinical experience for students where they are allowed to make mistakes without harming the patient,” Archer said. “Students work without the assistance of faculty input and are expected to take care of the mannequin as if it were a real person.”
Students are in completely in charge of the patient’s care while participating in simulation labs, which are included in many courses at Baptist College.

“I am very proud of Nan and Libby for their accomplishment,” said Betty Sue McGarvey, president of Baptist College. “They are truly dedicated nursing educators who strive to provide high quality education to their students, and I have no doubt they will do the same to those who seek advice from the program’s fellows.”

The college, established in 1994, offers a Bachelor of Science in nursing and a Bachelor of Health Sciences with majors in respiratory care, diagnostic medical sonography, health care management, nuclear medicine technology, medical radiography, medical laboratory science and radiation therapy technology. The college also offers completion degrees for licensed or registered nurses and respiratory therapists. In addition, the college provides a variety of class schedules, from traditional day classes to evening and weekend programs. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the Bachelor of Health Sciences. The college also participates in many federal and state financial aid programs.
