Baptist Minor Meds Host Second Free Flu Shot Event

Anyone 18 and older can get the vaccine at event

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Baptist Minor Medical Centers will host another free flu shot event for the community on Thursday Dec. 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Baptist Minor Medical Center in Olive Branch, Miss., located at 8990 Germantown Extended; and Baptist Memorial Hospital-Collierville, located at 1500 West Poplar Ave.

Baptist hosted a similar event for the community in November.

The goal of the event is to raise awareness about the importance of getting a yearly flu shot. Educational information on H1N1 and seasonal flu will be available. This year is the first year the seasonal flu shot includes protection from H1N1.

"The best way to prevent the flu is to get the flu vaccine," said Dr. Monica Griffin, medical director of Baptist Minor Meds. "We are excited to provide this service at no charge to the community."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 200,000 Americans require hospital treatment and between 3,000 and 49,000 die each year from the flu or flu-related complications.

The CDC recommends the flu shot for healthy people 6 months and older.

Groups that should not receive the flu vaccine include anyone who is sick with a fever, those with a history of Guillain-Barre syndrome or those with an egg or mercury allergy.

Baptist Minor Meds provide a combination of urgent care, workers' compensation, and a broad range of occupational health and preventive services. Highly trained physicians and nurses staff the centers, which are equipped with X-ray machines, basic in-house labs and EKGs. No appointment is necessary.
