Baptist Memphis Recognized Nationally for Surgery Quality Standards

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The American College of Surgeons recently recognized Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis for achieving exemplary outcomes for surgical patient care.

As a participant in the ACS' National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, Baptist Memphis is required to track surgical procedure outcomes and collect data that direct patient safety and improvement quality.

The program commends a select group of hospitals for achieving exemplary outcome performances in at least two of the following five clinical areas: deep vein thrombosis; cardiac incidents, including cardiac arrest; pneumonia; surgical site infections; and urinary tract infections.

"We are so pleased that our facility was recognized for implementing quality surgery standards," said Derick Ziegler, administrator and CEO of Baptist Memphis. "We will continue striving to deliver high quality care and favorable patient outcomes."

The Baptist Memphis campus includes the 706-bed hospital that is the flagship of the Baptist Memorial Health Care system. It serves as a major referral center for patients from across the Mid-South and offers many diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitation services. The hospital has added hundreds of beds in the past few years, with the opening of a new patient tower and the Baptist Heart Institute. Consumers have rated Baptist Memphis their most preferred hospital for overall health care services in an independent National Research Corp. poll for the past 15 years in a row, and according to 2011 HealthGrades®, Baptist Memphis is in the top 5 percent nationally for emergency medicine and cardiac surgery and in the top 10 percent in the nation for overall cardiac services, cardiac surgery, stroke treatment, pulmonary services, prostatectomy, GI medical treatment and critical care.
