Baptist DeSoto Receives Grant from Susan G. Komen Foundation

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - A Susan G. Komen Foundation grant will enable Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto to provide free digital screening mammograms and diagnostic mammograms to underserved women.

Women who live in DeSoto or Tunica counties and who are uninsured, have Medicaid or Medicare, or who otherwise cannot afford one are eligible for free mammograms. The hospital will provide baseline mammograms for eligible women 35-40 years of age; women 40 and older will receive annual screening and diagnostic mammograms. Younger women may qualify for free mammograms if they have a personal or family history of breast cancer.

The grant funds will cover the cost of the mammogram, radiologist fee and additional procedures, such as breast ultrasounds and biopsies, the radiologist recommends.

Women who are eligible for this service may call 662-772-2100 to request a 2010 registration form.

Baptist DeSoto is a 339-bed hospital that offers diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitation services. In November 2006, Baptist DeSoto opened a new, 11-story tower, featuring all-private rooms, expanded operating suites and a new emergency room. In 2010, Baptist DeSoto received the Hospital of the Year award (100 beds or more) from the Mississippi Nurses Association, and the hospital's Women's Center became the first breast imaging facility in DeSoto County to offer digital mammography. The hospital offers open-heart surgery and a number of other cardiovascular services, and the emergency department's heart attack response rate is, on average, 30 minutes faster than the national benchmark. Baptist DeSoto's inpatient rehabilitation program was ranked in the top 1 percent in the nation for quality in a report based on 2009 performance outcomes.
