Baptist DeSoto Facility Services Director Earns Certification

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - Ken Kirkpatrick, director of facility services at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto, recently became certified as a health care facility manager.

During his Baptist career, Kirkpatrick has played a key role in many of Baptist Memorial Health Care's largest construction projects. He worked on Baptist's Metro 2000 initiative, which included the construction of Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women and Baptist Memorial Hospital-Collierville, as well as the addition of a new bed tower and the Baptist Heart Institute at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis. Several years later, he came to Baptist DeSoto to help plan and oversee construction of the hospital's 11-story patient tower.

"Ken has been a valuable asset to this hospital," said Walter Grace, assistant administrator at Baptist DeSoto. "We are all very proud of him. He was instrumental in the completion of our bed tower as well as everyday operations."

To earn the health care facility manager credential, participants must have a blend of education and experience and pass a multiple-choice exam. The credential is valid for three years, at which time it must be renewed through re-examination or 45 hours of continuing professional education. Baptist DeSoto is a 339-bed hospital that offers diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitation services. In November 2006, Baptist DeSoto opened a new, 11-story tower, featuring all-private rooms, expanded operating suites and a new emergency room. In 2010, Baptist DeSoto received the Hospital of the Year award (100 beds or more) from the Mississippi Nurses Association.

The hospital offers open-heart surgery and a number of other cardiovascular services, and the emergency department's heart attack response rate is, on average, 30 minutes faster than the national benchmark. Baptist DeSoto's inpatient rehabilitation program ranked in the top 1 percent in the nation for quality in a report based on 2009 performance outcomes. In 2010, the hospital's Women's Center became the first breast imaging facility in DeSoto County to offer digital mammography.
