Baptist College of Health Sciences Receives Federal Grant

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Baptist College of Health Sciences recently received a grant from the Health Resources and Service Administration worth more than $170,000 to assist in purchasing equipment for nursing education.

The grant will be used to purchase additional simulation equipment to prepare nurses to safely care for patients, families, groups, communities and populations across the continuum of health care environments.

"With the purchase of new simulation equipment, we will be able to provide a learning experience that is more comparable to actual patient care situations," said Betty Sue McGarvey, president of the college. "New equipment will also allow us to expand training in the professional courses at the college."

McGarvey added that the new equipment will help prepare nurses through hands-on learning, by providing individualized patient care scenarios to enhance clinical decision making skills.

The college, established in 1994, offers a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree with majors in respiratory care, diagnostic medical sonography, health care management, nuclear medicine technology, medical radiography and radiation therapy technology. The college also offers completion degrees for licensed or registered nurses and respiratory therapists. In addition, the college provides a variety of class schedules, from traditional day classes to evening and weekend programs. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the Bachelor of Health Sciences degrees. The college also participates in many federal and state financial aid programs.
