Baptist Memorial Releases 2009 Community Benefit Report

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - According to its Community Report, Baptist Memorial Health Care provided more than $541 million in community benefit in 2009-- including $333 million in community benefit in its West Tennessee, North Mississippi and East Arkansas affiliate hospitals.

In addition to uncompensated care, Baptist's community benefit includes everything from health fairs and educational efforts to donations and community contributions. During the past six years, the amount of money the organization spent on uncompensated care and total community benefit has increased by 55 percent. Baptist's community benefit accounted for 36 percent of its operating expenses in 2009.

"We consider it a blessing to be able to support our communities in this way, especially in this economic climate," said Stephen C. Reynolds, president and CEO of Baptist. "Providing community benefit is one of the most important ways we fulfill our mission, which mirrors the three-fold ministry of Christ--healing, preaching and teaching."

In 2009, Baptist invested $2.6 million in the Baptist Operation Outreach mobile health care clinic for the homeless, the organization's signature community benefit program. The van delivers primary care to the homeless at the Memphis Union Mission and Catholic Charities during the week.

One of the largest not-for-profit health care systems in the United States, Baptist offers a full continuum of care to communities throughout the Mid-South. The Baptist system, which consistently ranks among the top integrated health care networks in the nation, comprises 15 hospitals in West Tennessee, North Mississippi and East Arkansas; more than 3,100 affiliated physicians; home, hospice and psychiatric care; minor medical centers and clinics; a network of surgery, rehabilitation and other outpatient centers; and an education system highlighted by the Baptist College of Health Sciences. Baptist has more than 2,600 licensed beds systemwide and employs more than 12,000 people. For more information, call 800-4-BAPTIST or visit baptistonline.org.
