Memphis, Tenn., Sept. 1, 2005 – In conjunction with Prostate Health Month in September, Baptist Centers for Cancer Care will host a series of events centering around prostate cancer risk factors, methods of early detection and treatment options.
“These seminars are an extension of our commitment to empowering community members to live healthy lives by giving them the education, resources and support needed to make healthy decisions,” said Gordon Lintz, administrator of the Baptist Centers for Cancer Care.
On Sept. 15, Robert Donato, M.D., will lead a seminar on how robotic technology is used to treat prostate cancer. The seminar will take place from 6-7 p.m. at the Powell Library, located at 6025 Walnut Grove in the physician’s office building adjacent to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis.
Baptist Centers for Cancer Care-Radiation Oncology Center, located at 55 Humphreys Center Drive will host a prostate health screening on Sept. 22 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Reservations are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome.
And on Sept. 29, Eric Balfour, M.D., will speak on prostate cancer treatment techniques from 6-7 p.m. in the Powell Library.
According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1.8 million men in the United States are survivors of prostate cancer. About one man in six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, but only one man in 34 will die of this disease. About 90 percent of prostate cancer is diagnosed by a physician in the early stages – usually before symptoms occur.
