Memphis, Tenn., Oct. 20, 2003 - Baptist Memorial Health Care and FedEx Corporation (NYSE: FDX) recently became the only two companies in the Memphis area to receive the prestigious CIO 100 award from IDG’s CIO magazine.

The CIO 100 award recognizes organizations across the nation that excel in positive business performance through resourceful information technology management and practices. This year, it honored companies that demonstrate the resourceful use of technology and related assets that drive efficiency and fuel growth.

Baptist’s information systems department was chosen as part of “The Resourceful 100” for several resourceful decisions, including the development and support of a patient care application and physician Internet portal called BaptistMD that allows more than 1400 affiliated physicians and more than 1500 of their office staff and administrators access to critical patient information online in real time from their office, home or anywhere they have Internet access. Laboratory results; radiology images and reports; transcribed medical records reports; surgery schedules; fetal monitoring; physician directory; and patient’s demographic and insurance information are some examples of the information available.

We are proud to be recognized for our resourcefulness, but especially for the development of BaptistMD,” said Dick Escue, vice president and chief information officer for Baptist Memorial Health Care. “Our team strives every day to provide the best possible service and advanced technology to our patients, physicians and staff.”

This is the fifth consecutive year that FedEx has won the CIO 100 award and the eighth time overall that CIO magazine has honored FedEx’s technology practice and its impact on its customers and business.

“In this challenging economic environment, it is critical to maximize our IT investments, developing innovative technology that allows fast and cost-effective implementation anywhere in the world,” said Rob Carter, executive vice president and CIO for FedEx Corp. “Improving quality for our customers while adding value to our business is a top priority.”

The recipients of this year's CIO 100 were selected through a comprehensive three-step process. First, companies filled out an online application form. In addition, CIO editorial staff and members of its expert panel nominated companies they deemed best fit the award criteria. A team of CIO editors and writers reviewed the application forms and expert recommendations and voted on the final 100. The judging objectives were to recognize positive business performance through the resourceful use of IT systems, staff and budgets in a challenging economy.

“This year's CIO 100 award recipients are being honored because their companies have demonstrated resourceful use of IT systems, staff and budgets," said Abbie Lundberg, editor in chief at CIO magazine. "Maximizing return on investment is a priority when times are tight, and these companies excel in generating greater value from limited resources.”
