Cervicitis

The cervix, although a part of the body that is in the woman's vagina, or birth canal, is actually exposed to things from the outside world. Things like tampons and condoms touch the surface of the cervix. If anything irritates the cervix, the body sets up a reaction to protect itself from harm. This reaction is called cervicitis.

Cervicitis creates a discharge that you may not notice. It may become more severe, be bloody or have an odor. Pain and irritation can occur. Women noting these signs should see their healthcare provider.

There is a range of causes of cervicitis, from a mild allergy to a severe sexual disease. Tampons and condoms can cause an allergic reaction. Removal of the material from the vagina will usually treat this reaction. It may take several days, but you should feel better. If a severe reaction occurs, medicines like antihistamines or steroids may be prescribed.

Mild infections in the vagina, such as yeast, can cause cervicitis. These can be easily cured with medicines taken by mouth or put in the vagina. Care should be taken to keep the area clean and dry to help prevent repeat infections.

There are important causes of cervicitis that need medicine to prevent further harm. These include infections resulting from sex, such as herpes, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. The signs may be mild or severe. Tests determine the treatment plan. Treatment will help prevent the spread of the infection to other organs or your sex partner.

For more information, contact your healthcare provider.
