Homosexuality, having affection and sexual attraction to the same sex, is something that occurs in about 10 percent of the population. No one knows why someone is homosexual. Homosexuals often are called gay men or lesbian women. Often times they are called names that are mean and cruel. Sometimes homosexuals are attacked by people who will not tolerate different people.
Homosexuality is considered normal. Doctors and counselors do not consider homosexuals mentally ill. Homosexuals do not try to get others to become homosexual. Studies show that homosexual parents raise children just as well as anyone.
Many young people may experiment with same-sex relationships. This does not mean they are gay or lesbian. Often people who are gay or lesbian have an idea from an early age that they are attracted to the same sex. They often get the message that society does not like homosexual people. Many people who are gay or lesbian have long term relationships that are committed like married couples. If someone you know is gay or lesbian, they need the same love and support you would give others. If you have questions about homosexuality, contact a counselor or your health care provider.
