Teen years are the times when sexual feelings come to light. These feelings and attractions are often confusing. Some people have feelings of affection and sexual attraction to persons of the same sex. This is called homosexuality. About ten percent of the population is homosexual. Male homosexuals are called gay men, and female homosexuals are called lesbian. Some people are sexually attracted to men and women. This is called bisexuality.
Just because someone has a same sex experience, it does not mean a person is gay or lesbian. Many teens experiment and have these relations. It can be a natural part of learning about your sexuality.
No one knows why someone is homosexual. Some people believe it is something determined before birth. It is usually not a choice. It is important to remember that being gay or lesbian is not something doctors think is abnormal. Our culture does not do much to support gay and lesbian youth. Sometimes, teens dealing with these issues turn to drugs or alcohol to cope with the pain they feel from society. Some people have thoughts of suicide. This is the time for professional help.
If you are dealing with these issues, or have a friend who is, you are not alone. Counselors can help sort out the feelings. If you find a counselor who just doesn't understand, don't give up. Talk to another adult such as your school nurse or counselor. Your healthcare provider can often help, too.
