Learning to Love Yourself

How do you see yourself-as lovable, as a winner? Or do you see yourself in negative terms? If you focus on the negative, you may not love yourself. Teens who have positive feelings about themselves have learned to see themselves as good, talented and deserving people. They probably got a start by hearing their parents give them positive comments. They take in what teachers and friends say as well. Teens who see themselves as losers, or in a negative way, may not have had a lot of support from their parents. Maybe they were told to be humble, and to reject compliments. It is hard to accept compliments when you feel undeserving.

Teens with very critical and negative parents may need practice and guidance in learning to love themselves. One tip to recall is that each time a negative thought comes into your head, turn it off and focus on:
* the positive,
* the things you can do,
* the things you are good at, and
* the things that make you feel proud.

Many people can help give you advice on how to learn to love yourself. Talk to your school counselor, an adult in your faith community, or your healthcare provider. You are definitely worth it!
