Every teenager has emotional ups and downs. That is normal. So much changes during the teen years, everything from bodies to responsibilities. Teens find that friendships change, that there is sexual pressure, and that school may become harder. Most of the time, feeling down or having the blues comes and goes. This is normal. When alking with your friends you may find they have the blues now and then too. For some teens the blues seem to hang on. If the times when a teen is down are more common than when they are up, it may be time to seek help.
One way to deal with the blues is to talk about it to someone you trust. Others find that they like to keep a journal and write out their feelings. What those things have in common is that they let the feelings out. Keeping the blues inside and all to yourself does not help.
Some teens feel so blue that they consider harming themself. If a teen's feeling of sadness and loss of control are to a point that they are thinking about suicide, it's time for professional help. School counselors, nurses, other healthcare providers, even hotlines for teens, can help.
