Anorexia nervosa is a problem that is often seen among teen girls. People with anorexia fear and avoid food, and they lose so much weight that they look sickly. However, the person with anorexia does not see themselves as too thin. They have a distorted view of their body, and are fearful they will become fat. The normal curves that women develop after puberty make an anorexic feel fat. They stop eating, or eat very little. They seem proud to control their eating. Anorexia nervosa is more common among girls and women who have very high standards and like to be in control of themselves. Remember, people need to eat to stay alive. People with anorexia are starving themselves.
People with anorexia do not see themselves as too thin, they will often deny there is a problem. Girls often stop having menstrual periods. Girls with anorexia often exercisetoo much, take laxatives to lose weight, and may force themselves to vomit if they have eaten. Often times people with anorexia have badly damaged teeth from the constant vomiting. Another sign that a girl has anorexia is that they seem to know the calorie count for every food.
While many teen girls and women are concerned about their weight and appearance, girls with anorexia have a more serious problem. The starvation, the vomiting and use of laxatives can actually cause very dangerous health problems. Girls can develop irregular heartbeats, stomach problems, and bone breaks. It can also kill her. If you think you or your child has anorexia nervosa, contact your healthcare provider. This disease does not go away or get better alone. Often times the person must be put in the hospital. By seeking help you may be saving a life.
