Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Each day in this country 12,000 people get a sexually transmitted disease (also called an STD). These diseases range from common treatable infections to viral infections that last for life. Some STDs can even kill. People who have more than one sex partner are at great risk.

There are a couple of ways to avoid getting an STD. One is to remain abstinent. Not having sex is great protection from STDs. The next best protection, is sex that is between two people who have been tested and are not infected with any STD. As long as they have no other partner, they are free from STDs. But any contact outside of that relationship could lead to an infection.

For people who have more than one partner, or who do not know for sure that their partner is not infected, there are other choices. Creative lovemaking like mutual masturbation is less likely to transmit disease. Safer still is the use of latex rubber or plastic condoms, each and every time a person has sex. The condom needs to be on the penis before any contact with their partner. Once the penis is to be withdrawn, hold onto the condom at the base of the penis to pull away. That way it will not fall off in the other person's body. Condoms should not be reused. A new condom should be used for each episode of intercourse.

Sexual activity, whether oral, vaginal or anal can transmit the 20 or so STDs that exist. If you are concerned about an STD, contact your local health department clinic, a family planning clinic, or your healthcare provider. These resources will have information about the diseases and how to avoid them.
