Chemical Warning Labels

The typical home is full of dangerous chemicals. Many everyday products are dangerous. Some of these include soaps, vitamins, cleaners, antifreeze, and furniture polish.

You can get a good idea about which products are hazardous by looking at the product label. The label will usually list suggested precautions in using the product. It will often list possible side effects or symptoms you may experience with improper use of the product. Frequently, labels will suggest first aid measures you should take if you are exposed. Finally, you can get an idea of how hazardous the product is by looking for the words "caution", "warning", and "danger". All of these products can cause serious injury or death if used improperly. Always choose the safest product for your purpose, when you have a choice.

Read the product label. It will tell you:
* The way the product may cause injury. It may be flammable, or have dangerous fumes. It may be absorbed if spilled on your skin. Or, it may be poisonous if it is swallowed.
* Precautions you should take when using the product, like using gloves or other protective clothing, or only using the product in a well-ventilated area.
* The most common types of injuries that may result from improper use, such as breathing problems, skin burns, dizziness, or vomiting.
* A list of the active ingredients (this information may be very important to a healthcare provider or a poison control center).
* Ways to properly store, and dispose of the product.
* And, suggested first aid actions.

If a person is injured while using a hazardous chemical, or becomes sick while using it, you should follow these steps:
* Call 911 if the person is having difficulty breathing or if you feel they are in serious trouble.
* Next, call your local poison control center. This number should be posted by your phone. They will give you specific instructions. Your poison control center will always offer the most up to date advice.
* Keep the person calm, and in close sight. Do not encourage vomiting, eating or drinking unless told to do so by the poison center or the label.
