The best eating plan for a person with diabetes helps keep blood sugar levels under control. Each person with diabetes needs a meal plan designed especially for them.
Diabetes does not require special "diabetic" or "dietetic" foods. Choosing foods from all the food groups - grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy foods, meat and other protein foods - is the best way to be sure you get the nutrition you need for good health.
A meal plan will tell what kinds of food to eat and when to eat them. It will be based on any diabetic medicine you take and any exercise you do. If you eat away from home, try to eat the same amount and types of food as usual.
Most of the foods you eat now can fit into a diabetic meal plan. Your healthcare provider or registered dietitian can help you obtain a meal plan right for you. For more information about dining with diabetes, call the American Diabetes Foundation at (800) 878-1504.
