Herpes - Lips, Mouth and Eyes

"Fever blisters" or "cold sores". They are most often caused by herpes simplex virus I (80 percent of the time). Less often, they are caused by herpes simplex virus II (20 percent of the time). Either herpes virus may cause genital (sex organ) infections, as well. Without a test, it is impossible to tell which virus is causing the problem. It really doesn't matter, because the causes, symptoms and treatments are the same.

An outbreak of herpes simplex usually begins as a soreness or tingling of the skin. Small bumps appear that later turn into blisters filled with fluid. The blisters break within one day and then become sores that are covered with a yellowish dried crust. The sores can last up to two weeks. If the blisters are in or around the eyes, they may be painful and seep fluid. Usually the sores are gone by two weeks, but can sometimes last longer.

The herpes simplex virus is spread by direct contact and the fluid within the blisters is very contagious. If you have an outbreak, it is important to avoid contact with the infected area. Be sure not to:
* contact the area directly by sharing kisses, or other oral contact,
* touch yourself or others with your hands after you have touched the affected area,
* share soaps, washcloths, or cosmetics, or
* share eating or drinking utensils.

Once a person has herpes simplex they have the virus for the rest of their life. The virus lies dormant inside nerves. People react differently to infection with this virus.

Some people are exposed, but never get an outbreak. Some have an initial outbreak, yet never have a recurrence.Others have common recurrences. These are commonly triggered bysunburn, windburn, menstruation or emotional stress.

Treatment generally includes keeping the blisters clean and dry until they heal. For those with serious or recurrent infections, medication to prevent outbreaks is now available.
