Healing at home can be more reassuring and pleasant for bedridden patients than a hospital. Basic care giving skills can be learned by volunteer caregivers. They may be family or friends. Some of these skills are easy to learn such as changing a bed and skin care. Helping with personal care like bathing or toileting and moving an immobile patient can also be learned. Any equipment that may be needed such as a special bed, portable commodes, bed-pans, urinals, and other caregiving aids can be rented from medical supply companies.
Change the bed sheets every 4 to 5 days and whenever they are soiled. Use good support for the person's back if they can sit up. Lots of pillows are helpful. Provide something to brace their feet against so they do not slide down. Make mealtimes social and feed the patient a balanced diet unless a special diet is needed. Give small servings of food and plenty of fluids. The patient needs to feel comfortable, clean, and safe. Help eliminate boredom with radio, TV, reading materials, puzzles, and visitors. Caregivers can help the patient manage their needs in their own setting. Do not feel as a caregiver that you have to do everything. Arrange for help if more complex care is needed.
The term "home care" covers a wide range of services. These include help with house cleaning, cooking, and shopping to skilled nursing services such as care of patients with feeding tubes, catheters, and breathing devices. Nursing care may be provided by a registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, or a home health aide. Other services may be provided by physical, occupational, and speech therapists. Be sure the home care aides are bonded and the agency has workers' compensation coverage. If not, check to see that your homeowner's insurance is adequate. Be sure to research the costs and services of home care. A nursing home may be less costly than home care for a patient that needs complex round the clock nursing care.
