A bunion is a swelling of the joint that attaches the big toe to the foot. The metatarsal bone moves outward forcing the big toe inward. This movement causes swelling, pain, and eventually a bony outgrowth. Severe cases can become disabling, hindering a person's ability to walk due to pain and deformity. Bunions can be inherited and anyone with flat feet is at risk to get them.
Poorly fitted shoes that are too small, too tight, and too narrow are the primary cause of bunions. High heeled shoes with pointed toes are the main offenders for women. For this reason, women are more prone to bunions than men.
Bunion treatment includes wearing good shoes that follow the shape of the foot, provide ample toe room, and have a low heel. This decreases pressure areas and often helps to reduce or eliminate pain. Wearing open toe shoes will help, too. Massage your feet and soak them in warm water to relieve some of the discomfort. Severe cases may require surgery to relieve pain and improve the foot's appearance.
