Reye's Syndrome

Reye's syndrome is rare but serious. Persons with the disease may have an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. Reye's Syndrome occurs mainly in children and usually following a viral infection, such as chicken pox or influenza.It often occurs in children between the ages of 2 and 16 years. The illness causes:
* Low blood sugar.
* High levels of acid and ammonia in the blood.
* Buildup of fat and swelling in the liver.
* Swelling of the brain.

The exact cause of Reye's Syndrome is unknown. It is believed that aspirin may trigger it in children. This is why children younger than 18 years of age should not be given aspirin if they have a fever. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen are safer options.

Symptoms begin about a week after a viral infection and include:
* Fever.
* Nausea and vomiting for 1 to 3 days.
* A gradual decline in mental alertness as brain swelling increases.

Emergency medical care is needed when:
* Drowsiness advances to loss of consciousness or coma.
* Confusion, seizures, or convulsions occur.

Children with Reye's syndrome must be hospitalized. Diagnosis is made by testing the blood and spinal fluid. A liver biopsy may also be needed. There is no cure for the illness. Treatment consists of maintaining normal blood sugar levels and reducing pressure on the swollen brain. Most children completely recover in 2 to 3 months.

The best way to reduce the risk of Reye's Syndrome is to NEVER give aspirin to any child under age 18 years unless otherwise specifically instructed by your doctor.
