Even the word impotence is upsetting to most men. Every man will have problems getting or maintaining an erection at some time in his life. This becomes more likely the older a man gets. The good news is that there are treatments available. There are many causes of impotence. These causes are physical, psychological, or a combination of both.
There are several physical causes, especially in older men who are likely to have more medical problems and be on medications. Many medications can cause impotence. Some of the most common ones are medicines for:
- high blood pressure,
- depression,
- psychosis,
- anxiety, and
- epilepsy.
If you have sexual problems soon after starting a new medication, you should suspect the medicine and contact your healthcare provider. The risk of impotence is increased by drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes. Alcohol often increases sexual desire while decreasing the ability to function. Several physical states, such as diabetes, prostrate problems, and heart disease, can cause impotence.
If you have always felt comfortable with your sexual performance, psychological causes may be less likely. Older men have expectations that are not realistic. It may take longer to get an erection, but older men are usually able to maintain an erection much longer. If you are like most men, as you get older, you will need more direct physical stimulation to get an erection. This is normal and is something you should let your sexual partner know.
Physical and psychological factors often combine. For example, a man might have problems in getting an erection one night due to drinking too much. The memory of this experience may cause anxiety the next time he has sex.
If you have concerns, it is a good idea to get a medical exam. Your healthcare provider has seen men with similar problems and will help identify yours. If the problem is physical, there are many treatments that can help, including medications, and implants. If you suffer from impotence, the first step is to seek help.
