Attention Kids: You Can Be Healthy, Too
Good nutrition and a balanced diet will help you grow up healthy. You’ve probably heard a lot about eating healthy in school. People who care (parents, teachers and doctors) want to help you be fit. Being fit is a way of saying you eat well, get a lot of physical activity and maintain a healthy weight. If you’re fit, your body feels good and you can do all the things you want to, like run and play with your friends.

Here are some things you can do to stay healthy and fit:
1. Eat a variety of foods, especially fruits and vegetables. You may have a favorite food, but the best choice is to eat a variety. If you eat different foods, you’re more likely to get the nutrients your body needs. Try to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Here are some suggestions:
- 10 baby carrots
- 1 medium apple, banana or orange
- 3/4 cup fruit juice
- 1/2 cup salsa with chips
2. Drink water and milk as much as you can. When you’re really thirsty, cold water is the best choice. Milk is also an excellent choice because it contains calcium and minerals that help grow strong bones. Here are some things you can include in your daily meals to make sure you get two servings a day:
- 2 cups of milk
- 2 ounces of cheese
- 1 cup of yogurt
3. Listen to your body. What does it feel like to be full? When you’re eating, notice how your stomach feels when you’re full. Sometimes people eat too much because they don’t notice when their body is full. Eating too much can lead to unhealthy weight gain.
4. Limit TV and video game time. Even though these are fun activities, they are keeping you from being active. The important thing to remember is to have a good balance of watching TV and being physically active. Try to spend no more than two hours a day watching TV and playing video games.
5. Be active. Fitness helps you feel great and can be lots of fun at the same time! Invite your parents and siblings to play with you – they’ll enjoy being active, too. Physical activities should be a regular part of your day. Here are some ways to be active and spend time with your family:
- Bicycling
- Skating
- Swimming
- Running
- Team sports
- Walking pets
