How to dress your newborn in chilly weather
The weather forecaster says the temperature will fall
below freezing tomorrow and youve got to take your newborn for a
well-baby checkup. How should you dress your baby?
Baby cant tell you how he or she feels. You want to keep
your baby warm, but dont overdo it. Overdressing your baby could
make him or her uncomfortable.
Pediatrician Aimee Christian, M.D., offers these tips.
- Keep a hat on your babys head. About 70 percent of an
infants heat loss is at the head.
- Consider what you are wearing and add an extra layer for your
infant.
- Dress in layers. One child may be more hot-natured than another.
You can always remove layers.
- Keep your house at a temperature that is comfortable for the
family. Dont crank up the heat for the sake of your newborn.
You can always put a hat on her head or an extra layer of
clothing.
- Pack extra clothes and blankets in the car for emergencies.
- If any of your babys clothes should become wet, change them immediately.
- Stay inside as much as possible when its cold. Take advantage of any unseasonably warm weather by enjoying the outdoors!
