Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment

When a person has a mental or emotional disorder (for example, severe depression or suicidal thoughts), he or she may be a candidate for inpatient psychiatric treatment. Signs that inpatient treatment may be necessary include experiencing suicidal or homicidal thoughts, hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, not eating or sleeping for several days, or other mental or emotional health issues that interfere with everyday life.

Baptist Behavioral Health Care's Inpatient Psychiatric Unit is a 30-bed facility that offers a safe environment, attractive patient rooms, dayrooms and patient lounges. Our goal is for patients to feel safe and comfortable here at all times.

Admission to the inpatient unit is available through the Baptist Behavioral Health Care admissions office. We also accept referrals through the emergency room (ER) 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Initial assessments on site, to determine whether inpatient treatment is needed, are free. The length of stay is determined by the needs of each patient. In addition, services are covered in part or whole by most private insurance plans, as well as by Medicare and Medicaid.

What to Expect from Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment

All inpatients have individual sessions with their psychiatrist daily. The daily schedule consists of different group therapies and therapeutic activities. Board-certified psychiatrists lead the multidisciplinary treatment team, which includes:

  • Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners
  • Licensed professional counselors
  • A Licensed clinical social worker
  • Nursing staff
  • An activity therapist
  • Professional support staff

Another benefit of the Baptist inpatient programs is the access to our activities therapist, who provides:

  • Activities
  • Activity Assessments
  • Relaxation
  • Exercise
  • Journaling and creative writing
  • Arts and crafts
  • Team-building activities
  • Movies
  • Individual activities

After treatment, patients have access to our Psychiatric Aftercare Program and our Alcohol and Drug Aftercare Program. These are weekly meetings provided at no cost to discharged patients for up to a year. Patients also have access to physician specialists at Baptist Golden Triangle for consultation, as needed.
