Rehabilitation Therapies

Provide education and training related to functional task performance. This includes traditional therapies and community re-entry. The stroke program staff is specialized in techniques to care for stroke populations and employ evidence-based techniques, devices and technology to encourage functional recovery after stroke. A few such techniques and devices include the use of neurodevelopmental techniques, body weight supported treadmill training, functional electrical stimulation, computerized balance systems, VitalStim, etc.

Physical Therapy

Addresses impairments related to movement and mobility, balance, pain, exercise/activity tolerance, falls/injury prevention, fatigue and energy conservation, and spasticity management.

Occupational Therapy

Addresses impairments related to the ability to perform activities of daily living including self-care (bathing, dressing, toileting, grooming), home management, family roles, edema management, home safety skills, fatigue and energy conservation, vision and visual perceptual deficits including neglect, hemianopsias, diplopia, and visual acuity, and cognitive and executive functioning skills.

Speech Therapy

Addresses impairments associated with language and communication, social interaction, swallowing dysfunction, and cognitive functioning.

Recreational Therapy

Provides leisure counseling and training in therapeutic, alternative or adaptive leisure pursuits.

Rehabilitative Nursing

Provides education and training on the disease process, bowel and bladder management, skin care and positioning, and medication management.

Diabetes Education

Certified professionals work with nursing staff to address diabetes prevention and management issues.

Wound Care and Prevention Services

Specialized staff from our wound management center are available for consultation and assistance with management of specific wound or skin needs.


Addresses nutritional support of stroke specific complications and co-morbidities such as hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol, obesity, dehydration, malnutrition, elimination issues, and diabetes management.

Psychological Staff

Psychiatrists and psychologists assist with program design and are available for consultation to assess and address social, behavioral, cognitive, or emotional issues through education, medication, and counseling. Applicable issues include dementia, depression, emotional labiality/mood disturbances, sexuality, alcohol/drug use, social coping and adaptation, and cognitive functioning such as problem solving, reasoning, memory, and impulsivity.

Respiratory Therapy

Assists with management of breathing and ventilatory disorders, sleep disturbances and address risk factors such as smoking cessation.

Physiatrists/ Medical Staff

Provides oversight and direction to the rehab team and medical consultants (internal medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology, urology, etc.) to address medical complications and co-morbidities such as contracture, spasticity management, seizure risks, sleep disturbances, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension, orthostasis, thromboembolic disease, angina, cardiac arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, UTI, pneumonia, infection, and pain management.

Pain Management

Rehabilitation protocols and interventions as well as consulting physicians are available for use and consultation in complex pain situations.


Provides input, assessment and review of medication regimes and performs discharge medication reconciliation. Assists patients with development of a portable health profile, which includes advanced directives, allergies, contact info, hospital preferences, insurance info, medical information, major surgical history, medication list and dosages, medication sensitivities, and functional status.

Ancillary Professionals and Vendors

Available to assist BRG rehabilitation staff with fitting and selection of specialized devices and equipment as needed for optimal functioning. These include: seating and mobility specialists, prosthetists and orthotists, product manufacturer representatives, rehab engineers, and DME providers.

Medical Services

Baptist Rehabilitation Germantown provides or makes arrangements for necessary laboratory, neurodiagostic and dialysis services.

Case Management

Assists patients and families with case coordination and serves as a liaison between the patient/family, the medical team, the hospital, and third party payers. Provides education and status updates to patients and families. Assists with discharge planning and follow-up needs.

Social Work Services

Coordinates discharge needs. Addresses coping needs through group and individual support groups. Provides assistance with and connection to area agencies, resources, and services for social, medical, and financial needs.

Team Conferences

Although communication and interaction are a daily and ongoing aspect of the inpatient rehabilitation program at BRG, formal team conferences occur weekly and allow the rehabilitative team to communicate patient progress, plans, needs, and goals in a multi-disciplinary and collaborative forum. Patients, families and caregivers are vital members of the rehab team. Information exchanged and developed in conference is shared with patients and families for input and feedback.
