The Baptist Women’s Health Center was among the first centers in the nation and one of two centers in the Mid-South to have a full-field digital mammography machine. The digital mammogram offers better visibility of dense breast tissue and the breast near the skin line and chest wall than the traditional film screen mammogram. With this new technology, physicians can magnify and manipulate images in real time, as well as send them to other centers for diagnosis. Additionally, mammograms using the new technology take less than half the time of the traditional film-based mammograms and reduce radiation doses by 20 to 80 percent. Made by GE Medical Systems, this machine has been touted as the biggest breakthrough in mammography in the past 20 years. While the digital mammogram won’t replace the traditional mammogram at this time, it enhances our ability to detect breast cancer in women who have dense breasts or implants, a family history of breast cancer or a previous case of the disease. Early detection greatly improves a woman’s chance for survival; this is especially important for women who have an increased risk of developing the disease. Baptist’s Women’s Health Center recently installed Second Look®, a new computer-aided detection system, that assists radiologists in early breast cancer detection. Second Look provides a computerized second review of both screening and diagnostic mammograms. The process draws radiologists’attention to subtle changes in breast tissue that may indicate the presence of cancer. No additional procedures or tests are necessary, so Second Look will not lengthen a patient’s exam or office visit. Mobile Mammography Baptist's Women’s Health Center Mobile Mammography screenings are available in the Memphis Metro communities at the following locations and times. You will be asked a few questions when you call to be sure that you meet the guidelines for a mobile mammography screening. You will need to make an appointment and bring your insurance/Medicaid card to the mobile unit at the time of your screening.
