Anita S. Vaughn
administrator and chief executive officer
Anita Vaughn, a registered nurse, has been with Baptist Memorial Health Care for more than 30 years. During that time, she’s gained experience in most areas of the health care business, from the patient’s bedside to management. She’s also become a champion for raising the level of women’s health and making quality health care more accessible and convenient for women and their families.
In 1998, Vaughn was selected to lead the planning and development team for Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women. From 1997 to 1998, she was the director of Practice Management for Baptist Memorial Health Care, which included planning and operations for 11 Baptist Minor Medical Centers and six physician practices. Vaughn’s position as the administrator of Managed Health and Wellness from 1994 to 1997 involved planning, development and implementation of business plans and programs to promote the system’s wellness product line.
Vaughn also has a strong clinical background. In 1992, she was promoted from clinical director for Baptist Memorial Hospital-East (now Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis) and Baptist Medical Center to the assistant vice president for Baptist East, overseeing all of the hospital’s clinical areas. Prior to 1985, Vaughn worked in the Medical Surgical Intensive Care and Critical Care units, receiving numerous promotions during that time. Vaughn graduated from the Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1973 and later earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Memphis.

Carol Thetford
chief nursing officer
Carol Thetford is the chief nursing officer for Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women and is responsible for day-to-day operations for all nursing areas. She has been with Baptist since 1980. Thetford joined Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women as nurse manager of the newborn intensive care unit in 1995. She also held a number of positions at Baptist Memorial Hospital-East (now Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis), including head nurse of the Newborn ICU and interim nurse manager of the pediatric department. Thetford earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the Baptist School of Nursing in 1980. She was named one of the Top 100 nurses in Shelby County in 1995 and received the Nursing Excellence Award for Leadership in 2003.

Cindy Beard
assistant administrator
Cindy Beard has been with Baptist Memorial Health Care for more than 24 years. She most recently was the assistant administrator and director of Radiology at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County in New Albany, Miss.

Margaret Williams
chief financial officer
Margaret Williams joined Baptist Memorial Health Care in 1997. She began her career with Baptist as an assistant controller, supporting corporate budgeting and productivity. In 2001, Williams was named controller at Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women and was appointed as the hospital’s chief financial officer in November 2005. In her role as CFO, she is responsible for the hospital's revenue cycle and managing the hospital’s budget. Williams earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee at Martin in May 1984 and graduated with a master’s degree in health care administration from Central Michigan University in December 2001.

Kristie Brown
director of human resources
Kristie Brown is the director of human resources for Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women. In this position, she leads human resources programs and services for the approximately 645 hospital employees. As a member of the Baptist Women’s Hospital leadership team, Brown also is responsible for long-term and short-range strategic planning for hospital staffing.
Brown has an extensive background in human resources, having served as compensation/HRIS manager at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn.; director of human resources at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital in Houston; assistant director of human resources, compensation and employment at Rice University in Houston; and director of human resources and affirmative action at the University of North Carolina in Asheville, N.C.
Brown earned her master’s degree in public health administration from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., in 1989. She also earned a senior human resources professional certification from the Society of Human Resources in 2003.
