The opening of the Baptist Center for Cancer Care-Union City’s Radiation Oncology Center means Obion County residents no longer have to travel long distances to receive high-quality cancer care. The 13,000-square-foot facility combines some of the most sophisticated equipment available with experienced physicians, nurses, therapists and other health care professionals. Among the technology used at the center is a CT simulator, a 3-D treatment planning system and a high performance, computer-driven linear accelerator. A separate entrance for the center provides convenient access for patients and visitors.
Among the most advanced treatments available at the cancer center is intensity modulated radiation therapy. Using precisely shaped beams from a linear accelerator, this therapy allows clinicians to carefully target tumor cells without harming surrounding tissue. IMRT significantly increases the amount of radiation given to the tumor and decreases the amount given to noncancerous areas, which increases the likelihood of completely destroying the cancer while reducing both the side effects during treatment and the chances for complications after radiation therapy. IMRT is used to treat patients with a variety of cancers, including head and neck, breast, brain, lung and prostate.
